Codeine Information Important Note Why is Codeine prescribed? Codeine belongs to a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. Codeine is used to treat moderate-to-severe pain. Codeine is also a cough suppressant and an antidiarrheal medication. Codeine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. How should I use Codeine? Take Codeine just as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Never take more
of this medication than is prescribed for you. Too much codeine
could be very harmful. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking codeine and seek emergency medical attention: An allergic
reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling
of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives) Codeine must be avoided in persons with chronic heart failure, advanced respiratory insufficiency, bronchial asthma, and raised intracranial pressure. Persons with severe kidney or liver disease should avoid taking opioids orally because of the possibility of drug accumulation or prolonged duration. The respiratory depressant effects of opioids and their capacity to elevate cerebrospinal-fluid pressure may be markedly exaggerated in the presence of head injury, other intracranial lesions, or a pre-existing increase in intracranial pressure. Caution elderly patients and debilitated users. Also prudence in myasthenia gravis, and Addison's disease. If you are pregnant or nursing mother, you must not use codeine. In pregnant women codeine has been connected to respiratory malformations of the fetus and there are risks for the fetus towards the end of pregnancy. Also infant withdrawal syndrome has been reported in mothers who have used the drug during pregnancy. Some studies have reported clinically important amounts of codeine being excreted in breast milk. What should I avoid while taking Codeine? Keep away from alcohol while taking codeine. Alcohol will greatly increase the drowsiness and dizziness caused by codeine and could be dangerous. Also avoid sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives, and antihistamines except under the supervision of your doctor. These medications also may cause dangerous sedation. Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Codeine may cause drowsiness. If you experience drowsiness, avoid these activities. What should I do in case of overdosage with Codeine? Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a codeine overdose include slow breathing, seizures, dizziness, weakness, loss of consciousness, coma, confusion, tiredness, cold and clammy skin, and small pupils. |
